Temporary alterations to bike routes or cycle parking, city-wide
I can't find anywhere sensible to put such things so this is a general issue for people to start specific threads pertaining to temporary closures.

Motion for Camcycle AGM 2016: Street Cycle Parking
Providing secure places to park bicycles is a simple and effective way to encourage cycling by making people on bikes feel welcome. In some areas of Cambridge residents have got used to all the spare street space being allocated to the storage of motor vehicles and very little for bikes. The result has been badly parked bikes cluttering hallways, clinging to drainpipes and other street furniture. The experience on Thoday Street where some on-carriageway racks have been installed is a good example of how the problem can be addressed.
Camcycle resolves to:
1. Champion the replacement of on street car parking with cycle parking where it is clearly needed
2. Identify streets where this should and can be achieved
3. Work with local councillors to survey demand
4. Where there is sufficient local support work with local councillors to prepare proposals for funding. For example, from the Local Highways Improvement fund.
This motion was passed by 46 to one.

The Greater Cambridge City Deal has allocated £22 million over the next 5 years for:
"City Centre capacity improvements/cross-city cycle improvements"
see:
http://www.gccitydeal.co.uk/citydeal/info/2/transport/1/transport/2
Removal of car parking is an easily achievable way of making cycling more pleasant (and safer) Both the removal/relocation of Pay and Display and restrictions to all day commuter car parking on residential roads that form part of 'quiet roads' for cycling should form part of this funding stream.

I see Addenbrooke's have found a solution to all the bikes locked to the railings around by the front entrance.
Not, as you might hope, by providing more cycle parking, but by removing the railings.
I wandered around yesterday. There were 91 bikes parked outside of cycle rack spaces & 6 spaces free.
should be interesting for anyone who usually cant park in a cycle space over the next few days

The Papworth Hospital is moving to Addenbrooke's.
There is a public consultation until 26th August 2014, ahead of a planning application in September.

Quote: para 2.77 "The Government supports the motorist and wants to see adequate parking provision for them...."
Question 2.16: Do you agree that parking policy should be strengthened to tackle on-street parking problems by restricting powers to set maximum parking standards?
Not a simple issue, but probably worth CCyC's commenting.

The members' list has just had a post from a Tess Jones saying:

I've replied that as someone who works on site, this is the first I've heard about this. There are various implications, that need looking at, before we decide if and what we need to say in the consulation.

Forwarded message:
I noticed that half of the bicycle shelter was fenced off, and I wondered whether we may be getting some new racks. In Connect I read the Trust was considering two tier bike racks so I was half expecting we would get these. Today however I learnt that the area will be transformed into a smoking shelter! Is this true?
I think it is fair to state 30% of the people working in the S-block cycle into work. Losing half of our cycle parking facilities is not very helpful. The area is heavily used and often overflowing with bikes.
If the area will indeed be turned into a smoking shelter, can you please explain why this decision was made and why it was not communicated to the staff concerned?
This is outrageous and a good press story. Robin - are you up for this?

The Addenbrooke's site is a poor cycling environment in so many ways. A full set of proposals for change are needed.
The application proposes to design a new lobby for this department and to relocate the cycle racks.

Basically, it's an area which was surveyed in the summer, where we identified that the current cycle parking was rubbish.
They are planning to improve the spacing, and make it secure sheds, but at the cost of reducing the number of spaces, which oddly I inspected the other lunchtime and all were full apart from the "wheelbenders at 30cm spacing", from 178 spaces to 146 spaces. When we did our survey, we felt more spaces could be fitted in, at a better spacing, than what is currently there. There is more detail in the Design and Access Statement regarding the lighting than there is about the actual sheds, how you get in and out of them, and whether you can easily park a bike in them.

The County is proposing a 'controlled parking zone' to cover a wide area around Addenbrooke's. The exact limits are to be discussed, and issues will arise in area of new housing where the roads are yet to be adopted.
An initial meetimg for stakeholders is to be held at Hills Road VI form college on Thursday February 2nd from 18:30 to 20:30
The map shows the area being studied
